How To Write To Your U.S. Senator :
Letter Title: Cosponsor the Prevention of Childhood Obesity Act (S. 799) Letter: I urge you to support Sen. Edward Kennedy’s Prevention of Childhood Obesity Act. The percentage of young people who are overweight has more than tripled since 1980. Among children and teens aged 6 to 19 years, 16% (more than 9 million young people) are considered overweight. In addition, national data shows that foods eaten from the school cafeteria make up 19% to 50% of students’ total daily calorie intake during a school day. As a parent, I am appalled that there are NO COMPREHENSIVE FEDERAL COMPETITIVE FOOD STANDARDS to monitor the foods marketed and sold in U.S. schools. Sen. Kennedy’s bill aims to amend the Public Health Service Act to provide for the coordination of federal government policies to prevent obesity in childhood, to provide for state childhood obesity prevention and control, and to establish grant programs to prevent childhood obesity in homes, schools, and communities. Currently, only one other U.S. senator supports the Prevention of Childhood Obesity Act, Sen. Richard Durbin (Ill.). With your support, we can pass this legislation. Thank you.
